I’ve noted before that it’s a bit horrifying. If you haven’t read this essay about it, you should. The plotting that the author relates is very similar to how a Zynga employee explained his work to me.

Despicable, selfish. I remember when I was at CNET a few guys from Zynga came to pitch their company to us, and they were all just falling over themselves trying to convince us that the work they did mattered.
